Atrocities against Hindus and Temples in Bangladesh on the rise again

There is a sudden spurt in the crimes targeting Hindus and temples in Bangladesh. The lax attitude of the Bangladeshi police and its politicians is to blame for this sudden rise. Unlike in Bharat, Bangladesh does not have a separate ministry for its minorities that number approximately 1.27 crores.

On June 2nd, a Bhajan going on at Shri Radha Krishna temple in Daulatpur of Narasingdi District was forcibly prevented by Islamists. Local Hindus engaged in singing the praise of Bhagwan Krishna were thrashed, vigrahas demolished, and thrown away. The local Hindus had been warned and threatened over the years to stop the Kirtan (singing Hindu devotional songs) and this attack happened since they didn’t comply with the Islamist demand!

Earlier the local Muslims had informed Hindus that Bhajan-Kirtan was haram (sin) and claimed that it is banned on Islamic soil. Hindus were warned that constructing temples and singing kirtans in the land of Islam is an insult to Islam and they have no place in a Muslim majority country.

Earlier, on May 30th two Hindu temples were attacked, murtis desecrated and tossed on the road. In the first incident, the Kali Maa temple in Agamara village in Rajbari district was vandalized and the murti was abandoned on the road.

Temples in Bangladesh

The same day, late at night, another group attacked the Saraswati temple in Bhaktapur village. The miscreants ripped the deity out of the temple and threw it on the road. There are allegations that both these incidents were part of a conspiracy plan.

May 23rd, Muslims attacked the Raj Laxmi Narayan temple in Hajiganj village of Chandpur district. Temple and devotees bore witness to heavy brick pelting.

The regularity with which such atrocities are cropping up in Bangladesh has created an atmosphere of fear in the local Hindu minority communities. Attacks on temples are now common in Muslim majority countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. There are also reports that fearing violent retaliation, many Hindus do not approach the local police when such incidents occur.

No arrests have been made to-date in any of the above-mentioned cases. Investigations into the ones being reported usually reach nowhere which is exactly what is prompting the Islamists who now brazenly attack temples. Crimes on minorities and their places of worship in Bangladesh continue unhindered.
