Surat: Hindu temple demolished amid protests, protestors detained

A Hindu temple was demolished by the BJP-majority Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) even as devotees and locals protested against the move. The demolition of the Ramapeer Temple in Surat’s Kadodara area was undertaken by the Surat municipal team on Wednesday amidst protests. The protestors, who were detained by the police, were let off later.

The corporation declared the temple ‘illegal’ stating that it was blocking the road and a team of municipal officials arrived at the spot along with police personnel on Wednesday to undertake the demolition. The team of SMC officials who had arrived to carry out the temple demolition was gheraoed by the public.

Following this, an argument broke out between the devotees and the SMC officials. The devotees accused the SMC officials of being biased against Hindus. The temple demolition squad including the JCB operators faced stiff opposition from the public. However, demolition of the temple was undertaken amid tight security. As the protests heated up, police rounded up 5 of the protestors and took them into custody but they were later released.

A video that has gone viral on social media since the incident shows a Pujari sobbing inconsolably. The Pujari is said to belong to the Valmiki Samaj. While the apex court of the country wants zigzag roads to avoid the felling of trees for development projects, Hindu temples are demolished by the secular state citing ‘development’ as an excuse.

Trampling upon Hindu religious sentiments has become a routine affair in secular Bharat, be it the Surat temple demolition, the takeover of Hindu temples in Uttarakhand, or the anti-Hindu actions of the Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government. Such insensitive acts as witnessed in Surat also arise from the fact that the babudom is still entrenched in the colonial era anti-Hindu mindset.
