Dravidian stockists protest against temple consecration, try to demolish yagasala

Goons of a Dravidian outfit tried to stop a temple consecration ceremony and threatened to demolish the yagasala. The temple is located inside the premises of Erode Corporation Office and they were against performing yajna in a government office.

The Raja Ganapati temple located in the premises of Erode Corporation Office had recently undergone renovation and the consecration ceremony was planned to be conducted on December 4. The temple is a small one and its presence preceded the corporation office. So far the temple functioned without any disturbance. But when the consecration ceremony was held, reportedly due to space constraints the yagasala were set up in front of the corporation office.

Dravidian outfits took an exception to this and opposed the consecration ceremony being conducted inside the corporation office grounds. They threatened to demolish the yagasala with crowbars and shovels. Members of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam(DVK), a rabid Dravidian outfit, said that “temple, worship and rituals” should not be present or allowed in a “secular government space like Corporation Office”.

Its members staged a protest raising slogans threatening to demolish the yagasala in the event the corporation fails to remove them. They carried banners which said that the Erode Corporation administration was bringing disrepute to the ‘secular Dravidian Model government’. Later they tried to demolish the yagasala by force using the crow bars and shovels they had brought along. 12 of them have been arrested for trying to disturb public peace and order.

BJP and Hindu outfits condemned DVK and questioned why they were silent all these years as the temple has been in the corporation office grounds for decades. Former BJP campaign wing secretary Saravanan who spoke to media said that the temple was renovated during ADMK rule as well but Dravidian outfits were not bothered then. He said, “The temple was built many years ago. Where did they go when the temple was renovated a few years ago? It is very wrong to say that they will demolish the yagasala when everything is ready for consecration. These Dravidian outfits are indulging in such things to deflect public criticism of MK Stalin’s bad administration.”

“Why don’t they go to the land which the court recently declared as being encroached by CSI Church? When the government utilizes the funds and revenue of temples, what is wrong in the presence of temples in government offices?”, he questioned. Hindu Munnani Erode district President Jagadeesan said, “Kallakurichi Collector office is located on temple land. Let them go and demolish it first. When the government uses land, money and other temple properties, there is nothing wrong in building temples on government land.”

He further said, “The government is controlling only Hindu temples through Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, and in that case there is nothing wrong in building temples or doing puja in government office premises. If they think it’s wrong then let them leave the temples first. If doing puja in a government office is wrong and against secularism isn’t it wrong to provide financial aids for Haj and Jerusalem pilgrimage?”.

The CSI Church in Erode is encroaching 12.66 acres of prime property worth Rs 800 crores claiming that they have documents to claim ownership. Part of the property was leased to the London Mission in 1905 by the British. It was later passed on to the Church of South India which gradually encroached the land around it building hospitals, educational institutions, etc.

The Erode Kottai Mariamman Temple Devotees Association had exposed this encroachment and filed an intervention petition when the matter went to court. Recently the Madras High Court ruled that CSI Church has indeed encroached the property and directed the concerned authorities to recover it. Dravidian outfits are yet to make even a peep about it even though the church had refused to give land for an ambitious road project despite it having encroached it in the first place.

  1. modi government has 2 options. We dont need these protests and other things for political mileage.
1)free all Hindu temples from government control as all other religions places of worship are out of government control.
2)bring all places of worship of all religions under government control to remove description based on religion.
