9 beads of priceless gold-studded rudraksha necklace go missing in Ettumanoor Shiva temple

A theft was reported at Ettumanoor Shiva temple, the epi-center of Shaiva tantra in the Kottayam district of Kerala. The original rudraksha necklace consisting of 81 beads worn by the presiding deity is missing and has been replaced with a 72 beaded one! Each bead is set in two oval plates of gold before being strung to the next bead and those plates are missing too.

Circumstances show it was a deliberate effort to sabotage temple customs aimed at the most fierce & feared deity among worshippers. The offender removed exactly 9 knowing well that beads are always worn in multiples of 9.

The government-owned, CPM-led temple Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) authorities are now trying to undermine and mislead by focusing on the financial loss and not the theft. The original necklace had gold weighing 23 grams of which 7 grams is missing.

Last month, soon after taking charge, the new Melshanthi (Pujari) asked the temple officials to prepare an inventory of all articles at the shrine used for pujas and other rituals. This is when the matter came to light. This insistence from the tantri is a template for all to follow since this is just one out of many temples that holds tons of gold and other antiques and more importantly, are all now controlled by communist atheists in cahoots with Islamists and evangelicals.

The change of guard at the Shiva temple happened on July 5th and TDB officials came to know about the loss during stock verification, that same day. They delayed a detailed preliminary probe till the 14th. Even then nothing happened and the temple advisory committee wrote to the board this month following which the news leaked to the media.

TDB president N Vasu said that he came to know about the incident at around 9 pm on Friday, August 13th! He said the vigilance wing of TDB will ‘investigate’ and has sought a report from its Commissioner in charge of the sacred ornaments (Thiruvabharanam). He admitted that only 72 beads of the original 81 remain!

More suspiciously, the Temple Administrative officer did not cooperate with the police as he refused to give them a clear statement about the loss. This was after the circle inspector of police visited the temple after receiving direct ‘orders’ from the local CPM MLA (he is also a minister) who visited the temple.

The minister appeared at the temple as soon as the media started flashing the news. The Temple admin officer told the police that he could not confirm whether the gold or the necklace is missing! He told them he will inform them after the ornament commissioner submits his report!

The police decided not to file a case since they did not receive a ‘statement’ confirming the crime! Would they choose the same strategy had this happened in a church or a mosque, is anybody’s guess. Police are yet to register a case in the matter and devotees suspect attempts to cover up and sabotage investigations. Demanding a comprehensive inquiry, Hindu organizations planned to conduct Namajapa protests at all four gates of the temple on Monday.

The Murti here is in his most wrathful Aghora form and it is likely that those responsible for this folly will realize it soon. Communists, jihadis and others who are not satisfied trying to hurt the son who abodes Sabarimala are now targeting the father Bhagwan Shiva.

Originally built by Bhagwan Parasuram, the present temple building and a fortress around it were last reconstructed in 1542 and have several valuable possessions. All Pandavas and sage Vyasa have worshipped here. Wall murals of Pradosha Nritham (Dance of Shiva) are the best in Bharat. Artists throng the temple to draw and learn. The temple roofs are covered with copper sheets, and it has 14 ornamental tops.

The temple is also famous for its antiques including golden elephants of which seven are of 2 feet height and one is 1 foot. They come out of the temple vault just once every year, are made of a jackfruit tree and are covered in 13 kg of gold. They were in the temple vault last time around when it was taken for darshan by devotees. The communist lust for gold has become apparent in the past few years and obviously, they will move on to bigger things. Hindus also know what the jihadis feel about our deities.

The iron grip that the state government has over temples is now trying to stifle atrocities on Hindus and unless resisted, our temple wealth might soon be a thing of the past. If it cannot save the dignity of our temples, the state should return them to the people.
