“The arrest of six Ukrainian nationals and one American citizen by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is a security threat with long-term implications. While the immediate theatre of activity appears to be Myanmar, in the long run Bharat’s North-East might be affected badly.
The arrests, at first glance, may seem like a routine instance of foreigners violating visa norms and engaging in unlawful activities across borders. However, the details reveal a far more troubling picture. These individuals reportedly entered the country on valid tourist visas, travelled to Assam, moved into Mizoram without the required Protected Area Permit, and then slipped illegally into Myanmar. There, they reportedly trained ethnic armed groups in drone and electronic warfare.
Myanmar is currently embroiled in a civil war between ethnic armed outfits and the military junta. America is seen to be aiding and abetting the rebel groups, which are involved with narco trade in the region and have deep connections with insurgent outfits in the North-East. The training of advanced warfare techniques, particularly drone technology, to these groups is a dangerous development with long-term security repercussions. But what makes the situation truly alarming is the porous, deeply interconnected nature of the Bharat-Myanmar border, especially in states like Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland. To assume that such threats will remain confined to Myanmar is not just naïve but wilful blindness…….”
