Two PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) workers have been helping illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrant hawkers to set up their businesses. The issue was brought to light by Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), an indigenous legal NGO.
LRO has named City Engineer Prashant Waghmare and Deputy Commissioner Madhav Jagtap of PMC. Its tweet says the duo are actively aiding illegal immigrants in exchange for money. The organization has said it would take up the matter with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding a CID inquiry into the matter and filing of FIR accordingly. The NGO said it will also write to the Income Tax Department asking for a probe into the assets of the two PMC officials.
According to the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs), an estimated 40,000 Rohingya migrants are illegally residing in different parts of the country, including the capital Delhi. Last year, the central government told the Rajya Sabha that illegal Rohingya immigrants are staying in 12 states and union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Karnataka and Kerala.
This news must be seen in the light of security threats posed by illegal immigrants. Anti-national organizations such as the Popular Front of India have been caught settling illegal migrants with the aim to influence elections. Even Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that Rohingyas were a security threat as they were involved in arms, drug, and women trafficking. Similarly, illegal Bangladeshis have been caught committing crimes across Bharat.
