Nagpur: Teenager gang-raped by Muslim rickshaw drivers twice in 3 hours after leaving home

In a horrific incident, a 16-year-old was gang-raped twice with a span of three hours after she left her home following a tiff with family members. The incident took place after midnight in Nagpur and at least half a dozen men are reported to be involved in the gruesome act. Available information indicates that the teenager was first raped at a room belonging to a railway coolie at Timki, and later inside an autorickshaw in front of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH).

The Government railway police (GRP) and Sitabuldi police have taken 4 rickshaw drivers into custody so far who have been identified as Mohd Shahnawaz alias Sana (25), Mohd Touseef (26), Mohd Musheer (23), and Mohd Naushad (24). The teenager is a mentally challenged school dropout and it has also come to light that this is the second such instance of the girl being raped after she left home in the last couple of years.

Sana, Touseef, and Musheer were arrested by the GRP that conducted the preliminary investigation in the case before handing over the accused to the Sitabuldi police officials. An FIR has been registered by the Sitabuldi police who caught Naushad. Additionally, the names of two railway coolies have also surfaced for having exploited the girl.

The girl who left home following a family dispute took a rickshaw to Civil Lines. The driver, however, asked her to get off as she didn’t have any money. Following this, she approached Sana and Touseef who took her to a railway coolie’s room at Timki where she was raped by Sana, Touseef, and two coolies. The poor girl’s ordeal did not end here and she was then handed over to Mushir and another man by ner IGGMCH by the two.

The hapless victim was then raped by Mushir and the man inside an autorickshaw. The two took turns to sexually exploit the girl before abandoning her and fleeing the sport. Other rickshaw drivers spotted the victim in a disheveled condition and took her to Nagpur railway station where she pooled in money to purchase a ticket for Manmad where she said she wanted to go.

She was spotted by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) staffers who then handed her to an NGO. She was then given into the custody of GRP who got her admitted to a shelter home. The incident of her being gang-raped was revealed by the teenager to the authorities of the shelter home.

GRP Senior Inspector Manisha Kashid issued a statement saying three persons were arrested with immediate effect after GRP recorded the victim’s statement. Those arrested were handed over to Sitabuldi police who have invoked the Atrocity Act along with registering a case of gang rape.
