“Sambhal: SP leader Zia Ur Rehman Barq charged with electricity theft, fined ₹1.9 crores, FIR filed”,Opindia, December 20, 2024:
“On Thursday, 19th December, the electricity department in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh slapped Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Zia-ur-Rehman Barq with hefty monetary fine amounting to ₹1.91 crore for alleged power theft. The department filed an FIR against the MP and also disconnected electricity to his residence. The authorities now have also issued a notice to the MP demanding payment of the penalty as soon as possible.
As per the reports, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Santosh Tripathi confirmed the development and said that if the penalty amount is not paid by the leader, a recovery certificate (RC) will be issued soon in his name.
This comes after a team from the electricity department along with the state police raided and inspected Barq’s residence in Sambhal to check suspected power theft. The department collected existing meters as evidence as it charged the leader of tampering with the meters, and installed new smart meters…….”
