Hindu Youth Rohit Kumar ended his life amid pressure to convert to Islam by his Muslim ‘friends’

A young Hindu man, identified as Rohit Kumar, tragically took his own life in the Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh, reportedly succumbing to pressure from individuals who sought to coerce him into converting to Islam. In a viral video, Rohit said that the accused, Sattar and Salman, had filed a false case against him, compelling him to marry a Muslim girl and embrace Islam.

Family members of the victim stated that Sattar, Salman, and others framed him under the POCSO Act after he resisted converting to Islam. The accused allegedly pressured Rohit to marry a Muslim girl against his will. Before taking his own life by consuming poison on 18 November, the victim recorded a video expressing his emotional turmoil. Currently, one of the accused has been arrested, and the police are actively searching for the others.

The complaint was filed at the Vidhuna police station in Auraiya district by the victim’s mother, Sarojini Devi, a resident of Barke Purva village. She stated that her son and Sattar were friends, often visiting each other’s homes. During these visits, he became acquainted with Sattar’s daughter. It is alleged that Sattar intended to get his daughter married to Rohit and, along with Salman and Bunty Khan, pressured him to convert to Islam.

The family added that when the victim refused to renounce Hindu Dharma, the accused lodged an FIR against him on 6 September 2023 at Sahar police station in Auraiya. Salman accused Rohit of kidnapping his sister, claiming she was a minor. Two others, Anuj and Aryan Khan, were also implicated in the case. The police arrested the victim based on this FIR.

The victim’s sister contends that the girl Salman claimed to be a minor was, in fact, an adult. Subsequently, Rohit faced charges of raping and kidnapping a minor under the POCSO Act. After spending about a month in jail, he was released and began earning a living by driving an e-rickshaw.

On 15 November, Sattar, Salman, Bunty Khan, Dulli Khan, Tunnan Khan, and Vakil Khan visited Rohit’s house with weapons, pressuring him to convert to Islam. Despite the villagers’ intervention, the accused continued to harass Rohit. On 18 November, Rohit, feeling pressured, recorded a video detailing his ordeal and then consumed poison. In the video, he accused Sattar’s family of torturing him.

The Auraiya Police confirmed the incident and acknowledged Rohit Kumar’s video, where he cited pressure to convert to Islam. The police stated that Rohit had been in jail under the POCSO Act and section 376 of the IPC but was released on bail on 3 November. The police are taking action against the accused under various sections, including the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act.
