“Wasn’t spared even though I’m pregnant” says victim of Purnia violence

The fear of the May 19 attack lingers on as women of Majhuwa village of Purnia and others belonging to the Mahadalit community recall the horror. That night, hundreds of poor people, carrying petrol and weapons in their hands, suddenly wreaked havoc on the Mahadalit colony of Majhuwa. People of one community surrounded the township and set fire to it by spraying petrol. They even entered the houses and molested the women. The horror didn’t end here as women, children, as well as the elderly, were brutally beaten up.

Even today, the women get scared recounting the horrors of the attack. People say that they are still living in the shadow of fear. They neither sleep at night nor go out for any work. They cook under the open skies to feed themselves and their children.

A Mahadalit woman from Majhua village told that she is 4 months pregnant. Despite this, on May 19 that night, at 11:00 am, hundreds of people, including Ilyas, Javed, Nadeem, and other Islamists of the village, attacked their colony. The victim said that Ilyas barged into her house and tried to rape her.

After he wasn’t successful, Ilyas beat her brutally with a bike chain. She somehow managed to escape and ran to save her life. The mark of that wound still exists on her back and body. The situation of other Mahadalit women of the village is also similar.

An Asha worker said that she has also made several deliveries to the attackers’ homes. All she got in lieu of this service is trying to be molested and attacked with a sword by the goons. She managed to escape in a half-naked state saving her life. The situation is more or less the same for many women in the village.

Purnia DM Rahul Kumar said that three FIRs have been registered in this incident. Of these, FIRs have been registered against 60 people and 100 other unknown persons. Five of the accused have already been arrested by the police. The District Magistrate said that in this incident Nevalal Rai, a former watchman was beaten to death.

In accordance with government rules, family members of Nevalal will be given a compensation of Rs 8 lakh, of which a compensation amount of four lakh rupees has already been handed over to the victim’s family members. Apart from this, compensation of fifty thousand rupees each is being given to other victims.

The DM said that the victims of this horrific incident would be identified and given land as well as homes under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. He further said that local authorities have been instructed regarding the same. SP Dayashankar added that three companies of police forces have been deployed in Majhwa village keeping the safety and security of the affected people in view.

A permanent police picket is also being set up there so that such incidents do not recur in the future. However, all the victim’s family wants is justice. People have put forth the demand that the accused should be meted out the harshest of punishments with many people demanding the death penalty for the guilty and a speedy trial should be conducted to ensure justice.

The mainstream media, in the meanwhile, has conveniently ignored the Purnia violence, just as they have turned a blind eye to the massive post-poll violence in Bengal, only because the perpetrators belong to a particular community. Similarly, the so-called saviors of Dalits are also missing in action.
