Convener of the event in which Catholic priest George Ponnaiah abused Hindu deities has been booked on rape charges. Stephen, secretary of Arumanai Christian Association(ACA), lodged in jail for organising the event has now been booked in another case of raping a married woman.
George Ponnaiah, the parish priest of Pannavilai in Kanyakumari, abused Bhuma Devi saying Christians wear chappals so as not to contract skin diseases from her and spoke degradingly of Bharata Mata, PM Modi and HM Amit Shah. He was arrested after widespread protests and police complaints filed by Hindu organisations.
Arumanai Stephen, the secretary of Arumanai Christian Association, who organised the event was also booked for disturbing communal harmony and was lodged in jail. He has now been booked in another case, of raping a married woman. The victim, separated from her husband has accused Stephen and 8 others of confining and raping her repeatedly.
The victim was working for a local matrimonial service. Owner of the service, Jefferson, spiked her drink one day and raped her when she was unconscious. He filmed the act, confined her in a house and repeatedly raped her. Stephen and his friends also raped her on many occasions as per her account.
She filed a complaint with the police in April but no action was taken as Stephen and his friends are influential. Jefferson took his life though, fearing police action. As Stephen has been arrested now in the other case, the victim filed an online complaint seeking justice. Police have booked Stephen, DMK functionary John Bright, Henslin, Callister Jebaraj and other men under 6 sections for unlawful confinement, stealing, sexual abuse, issuing death threats, etc.
