Nursing student groomed, blackmailed and threatened to convert: Kerala

Shamnas, a native of Kannur, was arrested by the Alappuzha police in a grooming jihad case from Kerala. According to the complaint, the girl who refused to convert to Islam was sexually abused and her nude pictures were shared on social media.

Shamnas groomed the young woman through social media.  The nursing student from Kavalam was deceived and fell into the love trap. The accused pretending to be in love sexually exploited her.

From Thalassery in Kannur, he went to the girl’s house in Kavalam of Alappuzha, several times. It is an eight-hour journey covering 350 km. Shamnas promised marriage and started raping her. Unknown to her, Shamnas was recording their intimate moments.

He then started constantly forcing the girl to convert to Islam. When she disagreed, Shamnas threatened to circulate nude pictures of the girl on social media. The girl’s father told police that he had threatened to kill their family if they refused to change their religion.

Shamnas posted pictures of the girl on social media and that is when the victim approached the police. He was arrested following a complaint by the girl. Police said that other than Shamnas, another woman and some friends are also likely involved in the grooming jihad.

There are reports about strong political pressure on the police to settle the complaint. The charges against the accused include rape. The experience of this young woman reveals that grooming jihad is going strong in the state and Islamists are operating in an environment of impunity. There is an urgent need to introduce a law against unlawful conversion – similar to what UP, MP and Gujarat have passed -in the whole country.

Even more important is to initiate a social campaign to educate Hindu parents and children about this ugly reality – our religious organizations should be taking a lead in this, but are sadly silent for fear of broaching a ‘controversial’ topic.

Hinduphobes such as HINO (Hindu In Name Only) left-liberals claim that grooming jihad/love jihad is a ‘hoax’ as there is no proof of a large network involved in this activity. What they hide from public view is that in some regions there is indeed a group of loosely-connected individuals and institutions – such as maulvis, lawyers, safe houses – which facilitate these crimes. PFI-linked Sathya Sarani is one such indoctrination center for new converts.

But most grooming jihadis operate as lone wolves. They are indoctrinated with a supremacist religious ideology which encourages viewing non-Muslim girls as ‘easy meat’ or as legitimate targets for propagating their religion. Islamists believe that they are in fact doing a favor to the Hindu girl by converting her to Islam, as Hindus are destined to burn in hell after death. Such thinking is common among Muslims, thus the grooming jihadi usually finds support from his family, including women, and wider community.
