Nihang extremists lead attack on police, injure 30: Chandigarh, Punjab

Around 30 policemen were injured and several vehicles damaged on Wednesday near Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s official residence in Chandigarh. Many policemen suffered serious injuries in the unprovoked attack led by Nihang extremists.

In scenes reminiscent of the 26 January 2021 violence in New Delhi, Nihang extremists and other pro-Khalistan elements, ostensibly protesting for release of their community members arrested for various crimes countrywide, suddenly turned violent and started attacking police.

They were armed with swords and sticks among other things, visuals from the spot showed. Some of them were on horseback. The Punjab Police had put up barricades near the Chandigarh-Mohali border to prevent the protesters from moving towards Mann’s residence. However, the protesters tried to force their way through the barricades.

The violent attack on police personnel and property was carried out under the banner of the ‘Qaumi Insaaf Morcha’, as per reports. The group assaulted policemen and damaged a water cannon vehicle, a riot control vehicle, two jeeps, and a fire-fighting vehicle among others.

Around 25-30 personnel, including from the Rapid Action Force, sustained injuries in the attack. Director General of Police of Chandigarh Praveer Ranjan said an FIR will be lodged against those involved in the incident.

Shocking footage has emerged of the attack –

The main demand of this ‘Qaumi Insaaf Morcha’ was the release of Sikh prisoners across the country, who they claimed have completed their sentence. They have been staging a protest at the YPS Chowk near the Chandigarh-Mohali border since January 7. Later, more people armed with swords and other weapons reached the spot. The mob included Nihangs, who turned violent and assaulted the policemen on the spot.

The cops were chased by the protesters, one of whom was carrying a tear gas gun, apparently left behind by a policeman. According to the police, they used a tractor to remove the barricades.

DGP Ranjan said as section 144 of the CrPC was imposed in Chandigarh, the police did not allow the protesters to hold any protest in the city. Without any provocations from police, a group of protesters turned violent and tried to jump barricades, he was quoted as saying by PTI.

The official said several protesters, including Nihangs on horses, were carrying dangerous weapons, including swords, iron rods and sticks. When police tried to stop them, they attacked the cops with swords, said the DGP. Several cops even fell down and sustained serious injuries, he said, adding that they have been hospitalised.

“I think 25-30 jawans sustained serious injuries after they were attacked with dangerous weapons,” said the DGP. Ranjan said stones were also hurled at cops. “We used minimum force to control them… We will take legal action in this regard,” the news agency reported him as saying.

Later, while speaking to media outlets, some of the attackers, including kids barely out of their teens, were heard justifying their actions saying we made the ‘bhaiyas’ (derogatory slur used for Hindus, especially those from UP & Bihar) run away, referring to the police. Another group tried to play victim, alleging that “we were sitting peacefully, those bhaiyas, Hindus, Hindu extremists, RSS people threw bricks on us, police lathi charged us as part of a conspiracy…aren’t we citizens of this country?”

This is the kind of supremacist & casteist/feudalist language that was in evidence even during the so-called farmers protest and has now become a norm in Punjabi music and films, indoctrinating Sikh youth.

Nihangs, a hardline sect with pro-Khalistani tendencies, has been involved in several brutal murders (Sikh SC man Lakhbir Singh, Zomato executive Sagar Singh, factory worker Harmanjit Singh), attacks on police (Patiala, Tarn Taran, Nanded etc) attack on other sampradays like Radha Soamis and Nirankaris, and sacrilegious hate speech against Hindu deities in recent years.

  1. The demand to “release Sikh prisoners” has become very vocal after hardcore Khalistani Simranjit Mann was elected to Lok Sabha (Sangrur seat). It is his core demand. How such a man is allowed to be in Lok Sabha is a disturbing question before us. Now see what is happening: everyone from him to Amritpal to this new morcha are demanding in one chorus that prisoners (all of whom are hardcore terrorists and killers) be released. Shame on Indian state for allowing such things to fester. Even now they are not stopping Amritpal who is openly, on TV, demanding Khalistan and saying “India took over Punjab”. Really don’t understand if there is anything like sedition law in this country or not????
