A Muslim man named Shanavas doused his live-in Hindu lady partner in kerosene and then set her on fire, killing her. She was just 28. The immediate incitement for the crime was a video that Aathira had uploaded on social media, which Shanavas opposed. Both have kids from previous marriages along with a 6-month-old baby. They were living together for the past two years, without being legally married, near Anchal in Kollam, Kerala.
At around 7 pm on Wednesday, hearing Aathira’s bloodcurdling screams, people in the vicinity came running. They saw her try and escape from Shanavas even as the fire was engulfing her. They doused the fire and she fell to the ground.
Police were intimated and helped shift them to the Taluk hospital. Since Athira’s injuries were severe she was taken to the Thiruvananthapuram medical college and admitted to the ICU where she died.
She had the habit of sharing videos on social media platforms like Instagram. Shanavas regularly opposed and quarrels between both of them had become public. Aathira revealed in her dying declaration to the police, doctors, and her relatives that following an argument Shanavas set her on fire. It is said that the accused tried to self-immolate and suffered 40% burns.
Police have filed murder charges, and the killer is now in police custody.
The culture clash when it comes to Islamic attitudes toward women and kafirs, their conditioning about women covering themselves from head to toe, and the brutal reprisal that follows when a non-Muslim woman resists, are all classic indicators of grooming Jihad and the gory end of many such relations (exhibit A, B, C, D, E, F), even the seemingly consensual ones.
