Hindus have been at the receiving end of bureaucratic apathy and Muslim aggression this Holi with numerous instances of Holika Dahan being doused or violence being perpetrated by Muslims being reported from across the country.
Reports have now emerged of stones being pelted on Hindus celebrating Holi in the Muslim-dominated Saraiya area of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The incident is said to have taken place on 29 March when Hindus were celebrating Holi amongst themselves and some color accidentally fell on a Muslim passer-by. This small incident, however, led to stone-pelting and violence by Muslims from the roofs of their houses in which several Hindus were injured.

Members of Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV), who later reached the spot, came to aid the people assuring them help after learning about the entire sequence of events. One of the women eyewitnesses said “the boys were enjoying and dancing and the Muslims got jealous and started pelting stones. Even women were throwing stones. Muslims were pelting stones from the roofs. This has happened at least 4-5 times. Hindus are less in number here.”
OpIndia quotes the police as saying:
Chowki in-charge Manoj Singh said that the Muslims and Hindus live close by. “There is an open space which has a Durga temple. The Hindu boys were playing Holi there only with water and colors. At that time, one Muslim man who was passing by also got some color on him. After that, they started pelting stones,” he said.
The police, who also have possession of the incident’s video, has also issued a statement saying that it was the Muslims who first started pelting stones and further investigations are ongoing. The police have also confirmed that media reports regarding the incident of Hindus kicking open a door and destroying instruments took place as a reaction to Muslims initiating stone-pelting.
As per available information, only Hindus have filed an FIR on the basis of which a case has been registered under section 147, 149, 323, 504, 336, 352 of the IPC and other relevant sections of the SC/ST Act. Further, Azim and Aseem have also been taken into custody.
It must be mentioned that the area is a communally sensitive one with reports of communal tensions emerging earlier as well.
