Another case of grooming jihad has been reported from Assam this week, and the police have termed it a case of Love Jihad.
A 35-year-old Muslim man, named Jasimuddin, has been arrested in Assam’s Hojai district for faking the identity of a Hindu man and tricking a Hindu woman into marrying him. Jasimuddin hails from Hojai’s Nakhuti, while the Hindu woman is from Simen Chapari in Upper Assam’s Dhemaji district. Both were working in Tamil Nadu; it was here that Jasimudddin, pretending to be a Hindu, befriended the woman, lured her into a relationship. The couple got married in a temple and embarked on their “married” life.
As per reports, soon after spending some time in this marriage and living with the woman, Jasimuddin robbed her of her jewellery and cash and fled to his hometown in Hojai District, Assam. As soon as the woman realized that her “husband” robbed her of her belongings and valuables, she also returned to Assam from Tamil Nadu and lodged a formal complaint against him at the Lumding Police Station.
Representatives from the Viswa Hindu Parishad unit in Hojai are also supporting the woman in this case. She sought the help of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and submitted the written complaint against Jasimuddin to the Hojai Superintendent of Police, Barun Purkayastha as well. Reportedly the woman learned about the real identity of her “husband” upon visiting Doboka, Assam after not being contacted by him for a prolonged time.
The woman accused Jasimuddin of marrying her under forged identity and claimed that he had lied about his religion and told her that he is a Hindu man when they got married. She also levelled strong charges of physical and mental abuse again Jasimuddin and revealed that he had forced her into an abortion after she conceived his child.
A police contingent led by the Hojai SP launched a search for the accused and he was finally nabbed on October 20, and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was also presented before the court the next day.
Lumding Police Station’s officer-in-charge has proclaimed this incident of deceitful marriage under a false identity and robbery, a case of Love Jihad. “It is a case of love jihad as a man of one faith pretended to be of another to marry the woman,” he asserted and added that further investigations in this case are still underway.
