Kerala Muslim Godman justifies rape and murder, terms victims “prostitutes”!

While addressing a gathering Usthad Swalih Bathery, a Muslim Godman, proclaimed that women who venture out after 9 pm are prostitutes. As an example, he justified the infamous rape and murder of Soumya by implying the she was a prostitute. The rape and murder had drawn massive protests from civil society. However, local feminists and media, by and large, kept their quiet about the vile pronouncements of the Mullah.

Swalih further added that when the judge asked Charly (the killer, rapist) what prompted him to indulge in such a heinous crime and Charly replied that since it was 9 at night he assumed that Soumya was a prostitute and approached her (for sex) and when she ‘disobeyed’ him, he killed her! Such fundamentalism is probably common in Islamic State territory.

Soumya traveling in a women’s compartment was preyed upon and brutally attacked by the one-handed hardcore criminal Charly, pushed off the running train, raped, and left for dead. She died a few days later when even medical science failed her to revive her. The incident that happened in 2011 shook Keralite conscience and came to be known as the Soumya murder case.

Soumya, Swalih, and Charly

Swalih is known for his fiery and hate-filled speeches and hails from Bathery, a town in Wayanad named after an event in Tipu Sultan’s brita campaigns. When Tipu invaded Kerala, his battery of field guns was stationed here and the battery later became Bathery. Some say that Swalih has hormonal issues and others genuinely believe that he is a kid. His history as such is unknown, something commonly seen among madrassa students.

Swalih is not your ordinary alleyway speaker but one with thousands of followers and charges lakhs for his oratory skills. Being baby-faced and having a matching voice has helped and he has countless such ‘motivational speeches’ against his name, many of them abroad.

Back home he is a regular speaker at Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation (SKSSF) conventions. Formed in the 1920s in the wake of a Salafi Movement, the Samastha is a group of Sunni Muslims who manage the Islamic education system in Kerala.

His videos are available on social media dating back to 2017 and each and every one contains radical thoughts and repeated mentions of ‘other religions’. His follower base is evidence as to how a particular section of Kerala society is now entangled in the firm grip of religious fundamentalists.  Such messages of hate have also propelled others to jihadism and recruitment to IS.

It must be noted that during court proceedings, an accused and the judge do not speak to each other, and speaking about the crime is unheard of. The judge questions the lawyer representing the accused and in the High Court or Supreme Court, convicts are not even allowed physical presence.  Clearly the baby faced Muslim Godman was lying through his teeth.

Interestingly, none from the crowd got up to talk some sense into such foolish proclamations. Such comments do not help the community and add to the common belief that Muslims are mostly semi-literate.

On the 1st of February, 2011 Soumya boarded the train in the evening and was on her way home from Ernakulam (where she worked a small job) to Shoranur by a passenger train that ends service there. She had a mother and a younger brother to support and was in fact going to meet someone who was planning to marry her. When most of the passengers alighted she moved to the ladies compartment and was alone. Charly, a co-passenger had narrowed down on Soumya and he too boarded the ladies compartment.

He then tried to restrain Soumya. The screaming victim frantically ran in the limited space available in the compartment and resisted hard. Charly caught her by her hair and repeatedly hit her head against the compartment walls. Soumya had 6 similar wounds on the top left part of her head. These fatal injuries sustained on the head dazed and practically immobilized her.

Her loud cries and screams died down and Charly dropped her from the running train down to the track. Her face hit the crossover (made of hot-rolled steel) of the railway line. Charly alighted the running train from the other side of the running train and rushed to her.

He dragged her to a shady place at the side of the track. He tore away her clothes and raped the poor girl even as her face was leaking blood from the injuries on her head and face. He robbed her mobile phone (she had nothing else) and left the victim nude with her face up.

Amazingly a couple of witnesses hesitated and did not pull the chain. By the time they intimated authorities and found the victim she was fighting for her life and her left side paralyzed. Blood had flown into her lungs and throat and she could barely breathe. She was taken to Trichur medical college where she was put on a ventilator but finally gave up on the 6th of February. She was just 23.

Charly was a habitual offender, a born criminal mastermind with numerous charges dating back to 2004. His network spanned the whole of south Bharat and it was the Chennai-based mafia who eventually got him a lesser sentence. Just his supreme court lawyer cost more than 15 lakhs.

The local police, the state of Kerala, the opposition, society as a whole, and finally the judiciary could not provide justice to Soumya. A Supreme Court bench composed of Mr. Ranjan Gogoi, Prafulla C. Pant, and Uday Umesh Lalit set aside murder charges and altered punishment to rigorous imprisonment for seven years. The esteemed judges doubted whether Soumya had jumped or was pushed!

The judgement given was no doubt atrocious, but no one said anything as the girl’s family was poor and Keralites forgot the story. As for Swalih, no one has come forward to press charges and the local police are yet to eve take cognisance. The media and liberals are of course busy defending the memory of Danish Siddique.
