How a mosque instigated the lynching of Bihar cop Ashwini Kumar in West Bengal

Ashwini Kumar, the Station House Officer of Kishanganj police station in Bihar was lynched to his death at Pantapara in West Bengal, while on a raid to catch an absconding bike thief named Firoz Alam. The area is on the border between Bihar and West Bengal and is merely 25 kilometers from the porous borders of Bangladesh. Bangladeshi illegal immigrant infiltration has made sure that the Kishanganj Muslim population now stands at 70% and neighboring North Dinajpur 50%.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad general secretary, Milind Parande called the area a den of Islamic Jihadis. Bangladeshi infiltrators were involved in liquor and cattle smuggling and attacks on security forces had increased. “The area, by becoming the sleeper cell of Jihadi terrorists, also poses threat to India’s internal security,” Parande added.

They are now no-go zones for cops. The current situation is so bad that even petty thieves are able to gather mobs that are being instigated for violence against officers of the law, from loudspeakers attached to Mosques. Unfortunately for the family of the deceased, Kumar’smother, Urmila Devi had a cardiac arrest upon seeing her son’s dead body. Unable to bear the untimely and brutal murder loss of her son, she too passed away. The bodies of the two were taken for their last rites and later cremated together amidst protests from villagers.

Kumar, an up-right 50-year-old officer was known to take strict action against culprits, especially boot-leggers. Public outpouring forced the police to arrest Firoz, his brother Abuzar Alam, and their mother Sahinoor Khatoon for gathering a crowd to attack the police raiding party.

Cases have been registered against a 500 strong mob of locals. Mohammed Isreal and his son Mohammed Abdul have also been arrested for their inflammatory instigations using the Mosque for cover. Israel used the Mosque loudspeakers to ask villagers to stop the police from advancing into the village! The father-son duo was absconding and was arrested while on the run. They are the kingpins running a mafia dealing in stolen motorcycles. What kind of Maulvi allows such criminals to use their public address systems?

Seven Bihar policemen who fled when the attack happened have been suspended citing dereliction of duty. Seven against five hundred, what were the top brass in the Bihar police expecting? Bihar police alleged that West Bengal police did not respond to Ashwini Kumar’s requests for accompanying his raiding team citing election duties. Should not they be punished too? Why were the service revolvers provided to officers not used?

That the West Bengal police reacted only after the issue snowballed into disorder and the fact that this lynching drew zero response from the ruling TMC regime in West Bengal, is also suspicious. There are reports that the West Bengal police promised a team to help Kumar. This was allegedly done to lure Kumr, following which the raid began and that the West Bengal team failed to reach the spot, on purpose.

This is what Kishanganj Superintendent of Police Kumar Ashish had to say about his West Bengal counterparts.

“Had they helped us, our officer would have been saved,” he added. “What happened shows how the morale of criminals is high there.”

Ashwini’s family initially refused to accept his body. They alleged conspiracy in the way in which only Kumar died and the others escaped unhurt and untouched. They are demanding a CBI probe to unearth discrepancies. They also questioned why firearms were not used. They want capital punishment for all those involved in the lynching.

National media is now trying to twist the narrative mentioning that loudspeakers were used to announce that thieves had entered their village. Is the use of sticks and stones, the standard operating procedure when dealing with thieves in West Bengal? When did thieves start wearing police uniforms and were the attackers blind when they lynched an officer in his uniform, to his death and chased away the rest? Similar lies were also spread when a couple of Sadhus were lynched to their deaths in Palghar too on this very day, the 16th of April last year.
