It has come to light that a large and elaborate human trafficking network where a minor girl gets trafficked every 4 minutes has been operational in West Bengal. A 2010 UN report says West Bengal tops the list of missing children and women. The UN report says in one year (2010) 28,000 women and children went missing from just three Muslim majority districts of West Bengal.
Even as post-poll political violence, particularly that against women is at its peak, trafficking of minor girls is a major issue in the state of West Bengal that has so far failed to draw national attention. The human trafficking mafia takes advantage of the impoverished situation of families which makes them readily agree to send their girls, even minors, away in the hope of adding to the family income.
The girls are then either sold into prostitution or employment agencies that send them off to faraway places. The income is collected by the agencies thereby leaving the girls in a situation where they neither have the resources and means to return home nor to seek help. More often than not, villages have an established kingpin serving as a middleman between families and traffickers in cities who will sell the women into prostitution or to agencies that supply domestic help.
A team of techies from San Jose had also explored the plight of girls who had been trafficked and sold into the flesh trade in a heart-rending documentary titled “Stolen Innocence India’s Untold Story of Human Trafficking”. As per available information, Kolkata red-light district is full of these hapless girls and is considered the biggest red-light district in Asia. These girls are also sold as maids and sex slaves to Middle Eastern countries as well as in other parts of Bharat.
Hindu Samhati had highlighted the plight of Hindus earlier who have become victims of loot, rape, molestation, kidnapping, and murders. Hindus in general and Hindu women and girls, in particular, are precariously placed as the administration allies with political goons and Islamist fundamentalists protected by their political overlords.
Hindupost had brought to light how the free hand given by Mamata Banerjee to Islamists had led the latter to function with complete impunity in West Bengal. The post-poll violence and rape and molestation of women being witnessed at present is merely a continuation of the terror unleashed by the mafia who enjoy political immunity and support.
Telegraph UK reporter Ross Kemp had written in 2014:
I was investigating sex trafficking, and we had managed to track down one of the most prolific traffickers.
This guy – who I’ll call Mr. Khan – was trafficking thousands of girls a year. He said he had lost count of how many he’d killed, but estimated it was around 400. He was being helped out by certain members of the authorities, and when it looked like they were going to get caught, he was put under pressure by these people in authority to kill the girls.
He worked as a honeytrap, so he’d go into a village; shower a girl and her family with gifts. He’d say he was going to take her away somewhere lovely, but as soon as he had her on a train she’d be drugged. She’d wake up in a bed and be gang-raped, then forced into prostitution through shame, without the ability to get back home. Even if she did make it home, would she ever be accepted by her family again?
I’m not supposed to judge, but this was one of the times I found it very hard not to. He was trying to justify the killing of these girls by saying he would have been killed himself if he didn’t do it. He had gold rings on his fingers, a very nice car, and some bodyguards with him. After the interview, I just had to say ‘get him out of my sight’. I had so much loathing for the man, I can’t tell you.”
The plight of minor girls continues to be precarious and the report of a fact-finding team raises the question of women’s safety, that too under a woman chief minister.
