Meghalaya: Locals attack and vandalise Ramkrishna Mission School, curfew imposed

Amid rising violence and property damage in Mawkynrew village of East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, curfew has been imposed in the village to prevent further unrest.

On Monday, some angry locals attacked the Ramkrishna Mission School. They were objecting against the construction of the School on the land. But, the sources said that construction work was started after securing all the necessary permission and documents. But, a group of people were objecting against this.

Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Rosetta Mary Kurbah said the decision follows incidents of vandalism and violent clashes at the Ramkrishna Mission School, which resulted in damage of properties and injuries. The District Magistrate also raised serious concerns on the law and order situation in the official order.

Citing fears of severe breaches of peace and disruptions to the public order, the Deputy Commissioner invoked powers under Section 163 of BNSS Act to impose the curfew with immediate effect. The restrictions were intended to bring normalcy in the area.

Sources said, the curfew will remain in effect until further notice.
