Hindu youth Vishu Bhati shot dead by masked Muslim men: Meerut, UP

A 24-year-old Hindu youth Vishu Bhati, son of Ramveer, was shot dead on Sunday evening in Palra village, Hastinapur block of Meerut district, UP. Vishu was preparing for police exams and used to visit a govt. school for the same. On Sunday too, he was sitting in the school with his friend Avnish when masked men came on bikes and opened fire.

Vishu was hit with 5 bullets and collapsed, and Avnish too was injured. Both were rushed to a hospital, but Vishu succumbed to his injuries while Avnish is still undergoing treatment.

Angry villagers protested this brutal execution and threatened to jam roads, as senior police officials rushed to the spot.

As per a local, a religious dispute was started by Muslim villagers in this mixed-population village, but when Hindu Gujjars protested, police lodged a case against the Hindus. Objectionable slogans had been raised by Muslims and made viral through their social media channels across Meerut. Hindus had protested this and the matter had reached the police, and a ‘compromise’ was seemingly arrived at. Vishu Bhati’s murder is linked to the same case, said the man.

It has often been seen that such ‘settlements’ (razinama) arrived at through police mediation are not worth the paper they are signed on. Even in Kanhaiyalal Teli’s case, the Udaipur tailor and those baying for his blood at arrived at an agreement as per local police, but Kanhaiyalal was murdered on the first day he opened his shop. A radicalized and emboldened ‘minority’ community which has totally lost fear of the law just bides its time and waits for the right opportunity to strike.

Ramveer named 6 men for his son’s muder – Anas, Ashfaq, Shah Nazim, Akram, Mohammad Kaif and village head Gajendra – and 3 unnamed accused. Gajendra seems to have an old political dispute with Vishu and his family.

On Monday, during Vishu’s funeral processions, an angry crowd allegedly lost control and set farms and other property of the accused, who had all left the village by then, on fire. This violent aftermath was considered more news-worthy for our English-language MSM than the actual murder itself.

Police claims to have arrested 4 accused till now and has promised ‘tough action’. Villagers have squarely laid the blame for this murder on local police raising ‘Police Murdabad’ slogans, and demanded suspension of the Hastinapur SHO who allegedly ignored an open death threat directed at Vishu. Locals raised the rising lawlessness in Meerut district. The CM’s office has taken note of this murder and IG Nachiketa Jha rushed to the spot late at night.

Vishu Bhati was the only son of his parents. He had got married recently and has a 5-month-old daughter.
