A horrifying incident from Balrampur district in Uttar Pradesh has triggered outrage across the region after a Hindu family was allegedly attacked with deadly weapons by a radical Islamist group led by Mohammad Asif Khan and his relatives. What reportedly began as a simple question regarding suspicious late-night movement in the village soon escalated into a brutal and pre-planned assault that left several members of the Maurya family critically injured. The attack ultimately claimed the life of Dhanraj Maurya, whose death in a Lucknow hospital has intensified anger among villagers demanding strict justice.
Suspicious movement at night
According to OpIndia reports and the FIR details, the incident traces back to the night of 26 May 2026 in Pipra Ram village under Gaindas Buzurg police station limits. Around 10 PM, local resident Raju Maurya noticed Mohammad Asif Khan allegedly roaming through the village lanes under suspicious circumstances on a motorcycle. Considering the late hour and the importance of village security, locals questioned him and reportedly asked him not to move around unnecessarily at night.
Villagers say the questioning was routine and aimed at ensuring safety in the area. However, the accused Islamist allegedly reacted aggressively, engaged in heated arguments, and issued open threats before leaving the spot. Witnesses claim he warned the Maurya family that they would face consequences the next morning.
An armed Islamist group returns in the morning
The next morning, on 27 May 2026 around 7:30 AM, the dispute allegedly turned into a violent and coordinated attack. As per the complaint, Mohammad Asif Khan returned along with several family members and associates, including Waris Ali, Sajid Khan, Salim, also known as Salim Ali, Majid Ali, Aaqib, and Wajid. They were allegedly armed with sticks, iron rods, and sharp weapons.
The accused reportedly intercepted Raju Maurya while he was heading towards Pipra Ram crossing with his associate Santosh Yadav. Soon after, they allegedly launched a brutal assault with the intention to kill. The attack quickly spread as family members rushed to rescue Raju Maurya.
Entire family targeted during assault
Eyewitness accounts and the complaint state that the attackers spared nobody who came forward to intervene. Elderly members, women, and youths of the Maurya family were allegedly beaten mercilessly. Dhanraj Maurya, who tried to shield his relatives during the assault, reportedly suffered severe head injuries after being attacked with rods and sticks.
Meena Devi, Hiralal Maurya, Sohanlal Maurya, Akash Maurya, and others also sustained serious injuries. Villagers described the scene as horrifying, with blood scattered across the house premises and cries for help echoing through the area. As crowds began gathering, the accused allegedly fled while issuing further death threats.
Dhanraj Maurya loses battle for life
All injured victims were initially rushed to a local community health center before being referred for advanced treatment. While some victims stabilized after treatment, Dhanraj Maurya’s condition remained critical due to severe head trauma and internal bleeding. Doctors later referred him to a trauma centre in Lucknow.
After battling for life for several days, Dhanraj Maurya succumbed to his injuries on 30 May 2026. His death transformed the assault case into a murder investigation and sparked widespread grief and anger throughout the village and nearby regions. Meena Devi reportedly remains under medical care and is said to be in serious condition.
Massive public outrage and road blockade
As Dhanraj Maurya’s body reached the village after postmortem procedures, emotional scenes unfolded across Pipra Ram. Hundreds of villagers and relatives gathered in protest, accusing authorities of failing to curb rising criminal intimidation in the area. Protesters placed the body on the Basti–Balrampur road and staged a blockade demanding immediate and strict action against all accused persons.
The protest caused long traffic disruptions on one of the busiest routes in the district. Villagers stated that ordinary citizens no longer feel safe even inside their homes and insisted that justice must be delivered swiftly and transparently.
Police action and arrests
Police later confirmed arrests in connection with the case. According to reports, Mohammad Asif Khan, his father Waris Ali, Sajid Khan, Salim alias Salim Ali, Majid Ali, and Aaqib were taken into custody. Another accused identified as Wajid was reportedly absconding at the time of reporting, with police conducting raids to locate him. Following Dhanraj Maurya’s death, stricter murder-related charges were reportedly added to the FIR. Authorities deployed additional police personnel and PAC forces in the region to prevent communal tension and maintain law and order.
The incident has also raised serious questions regarding local law and order mechanisms. Villagers alleged that repeated complaints about aggressive behavior and intimidation by local criminal elements often go ignored until violence erupts. Many residents demanded exemplary punishment to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
Senior officials, including local police officers and administrative authorities, reached the protest site and attempted to pacify villagers by assuring strict legal action. However, protesters demanded written assurances and speedy prosecution. The matter soon attracted political attention as local BJP MLA Ram Pratap Verma visited the affected family along with supporters and local representatives. During the visit, he reportedly announced immediate financial assistance for the victim’s family and assured further support from the state administration.
The MLA also directed officials to ensure strict legal proceedings against all accused and promised to personally follow up on rehabilitation and compensation measures for the affected family.
Balrampur has seen such incidents in the past. Residents argue that questioning suspicious activity in one’s own locality should never result in deadly retaliation. The gruesome killing of Dhanraj Maurya has now become a symbol of fear and insecurity for many villagers who believe that stronger policing and faster judicial action are urgently needed.
With one life lost, several family members injured, and an entire village shaken, the case is likely to remain under intense public and political scrutiny in the coming days.
