Four top terrorists belonging to Assam and Tripura were arrested on Tuesday by the security forces in Tripura and a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from their possession, the police said.
A police officer said that acting on a tip-off, the security forces arrested the four dreaded extremists from Takarjala area under Sepahijala district in western Tripura.
The official said that during interrogation, the three National Liberation Front of Tripura militants – self-styled lieutenant Ganga Reang, 32, Jiban Reang, 22, and Lalthanga Reang, 28 — and Singhamani Reang, 26, who belongs to Assam-based outlawed outfit United Democratic Liberation Front (Breakaway faction), gave vital clues about terrorist activities in Tripura.
A large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the custody of the terrorists.
Inspector General of Police (law and order), Arindam Nath, has been monitoring the entire operation and the subsequent steps relating to the arrest of the four terrorists. After several years of lull, of late terrorist activities have resurfaced in Tripura, which was until 2008-09 devastated by the decades old violent insurgency activities.
The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) is a terror group which aims to ‘liberate’ the state of Tripura from Bharat. It has carried out numerous attacks on non-Christian tribals, Hindu spiritual leaders, and Bengali Hindus and is accused of forcing Tripura’s indigenous tribes to become Christians and give up Hindu forms of worship in areas under their control.
The NLFT manifesto says that they want to expand what they describe as the kingdom of God and Christ in Tripura.
In the past, Tripura’s previous CM Manik Sarkar had said state police had uncovered evidence, after questioning a church leader, that the state’s Baptist Church was involved in backing NLFT’s separatist terrorists. The church leader, Nagmanlal Halam, had been arrested with a large quantity of explosives. The Baptist Church in Tripura was set up by missionaries from New Zealand around 1940.
In 2017, NLFT along with other separatist terror groups had delivered a ‘final ultimatum’ to Hindi and Bengali speaking Hindus to quit parts of Assam and Tripura or face the “gravest of the grave” situations.
