Deception and Awakening: Unveiling the Sitarganj Love Jihad Case in Uttarakhand

A recent incident in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district, where Bajrang Dal exposed a love jihad case and ensured the arrest of an accused, has intensified the ongoing debate around the love jihad phenomenon in Bharat. This article expands on the report, reviews related cases, and places the events in a broader Hindu civilizational context.

The Sitarganj Incident: Timeline and Details

A team led by Bajrang Dal district convener Himanshu Kanyal, working alongside Vishwa Hindu Parishad volunteers in Khatima and Sitarganj for a week, uncovered a case where a Hindu woman alleged deception in marriage by a Muslim man operating under a fake Hindu identity.

  • The accused, originally named Monish (son of Irshad Ahmed Bharti from Meerut, residing in Dineshpur), posed as Manish Chaudhary on matrimonial site Shaadi.com.
  • On 11 December 2024, he married a local Hindu woman at a Hindu venue, under Hindu rites.
  • The woman later reported to police that she faced pressure for religious conversion, dowry demands, and abuse; she also claimed attempts were made to force her into eating meat against her vegetarian customs.
  • After being beaten and expelled from her marital home on 21 February 2025, the woman discovered her husband’s real identity and past marital status.
  • Police registered FIR 162/2025 under various penal sections including 69, 115(2), 351(2), 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, and arrested the accused on 6 September 2025.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manikanth Mishra said that the accused had posed as a Hindu man on the matrimonial portal Shaadi.com and trapped a woman into marriage. Acting swiftly on a complaint, police arrested the accused and produced him before the court.

According to the SSP, the case came to light after a woman from the Nanakmatta police station area lodged a complaint. She alleged that the youth had introduced himself as Manish Chaudhary, son of Amit Chaudhary, belonging to the Hindu community, and married her in a Hindu ceremony on 11 December 2024 at Prem Palace, Nanakmatta. Initially, life after marriage seemed normal, but soon the accused and his family allegedly began demanding Rs 2 lakhs in cash, a car, and gold jewelry. When she resisted, she was subjected to verbal abuse and physical assault.

The man who had claimed to be Manish Chaudhary actually turned out to be Monish, son of Irshad Ahmed Bharti, a resident of Shastri Nagar, Meerut, and was presently living at Gayatri Villa, Jaynagar No 4, under Dineshpur police station. Investigations further revealed that Monish was already married to a Muslim woman. The complainant alleged that when she opposed attempts to convert her, the accused and his family threatened her, saying her religion had already been corrupted and warning her of dire consequences if she approached the police.

The accused has reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation. He was formally arrested today from his residence in Gayatri Villa, Dineshpur. He has been remanded to judicial custody and will be produced before the court.

Hindu Organizations’ Activism and Community Reactions

Hindu organizations including Bajrang Dal and VHP consistently campaign against love jihad, which threaten the Hindu social fabric and represent a form of targeted harassment and conversion. They often organize awareness campaigns such as, “Shaurya Jagran Yatras,” and provide helplines for women, aiming to educate Hindu communities about such risks.

The Pattern: Similar Documented Cases

This incident is not isolated. Various reports document a pattern where Muslim men allegedly use fake Hindu identities to marry Hindu women and later attempt forced conversions, sometimes accompanied by abuse or dowry demands. Several media sources provide lists and details of similar incidents:

  • In Uttarakhand’s Haridwar, Azhar Ahmed posed as “Rahul” and married a Hindu woman; the truth came out years later with discovery of his original documents.
  • In Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, Ikrar Qureshi posed as “Amit Kumar Singh,” and the facts surfaced after several years.
  • A 2021 case in Meerut involved Mohammad Waseem assuming the name “Dinesh Rawat” to trap Hindu women.

Such cases, often exposed by family members or local Hindu groups, fuel claims of a larger strategy of exploitation and conversion through deceitful relationships.

Bharatiya law provides for penal action against fraudulent identity, forced conversion, and dowry harassment. Several states have also enacted laws requiring prior approval for religious conversions in the context of marriage.

From a Hindu civilizational perspective, the focus remains on protecting young women, preserving the Hindu family structure, and countering perceived demographic and cultural threats. It is important to note that, the social consequences of such repeated incidents justify community vigilance.

Conclusion: The Civilizational Lens

From a Hindu civilizational viewpoint, such incidents are not merely as individual crimes, but serve as warnings about targeted attacks on community integrity and tradition. Groups like Bajrang Dal and VHP seek not just legal justice but social awakening and organized resistance, viewing these struggles as essential for the survival and dignity of Hindu society.

Authorities are urged to take stricter action against fraudulent conversions and related abuses, while Hindus are encouraged to remain vigilant and united in upholding traditional values and identity.
