Assam CM Himanta ensures Muslim mob of 24 is arrested within hours of attacking doctor

The Mulsim mob that mercilessly attacked a doctor posted on Covid-19 duty has been arrested by the Assam police after the video of the incident went viral in social media. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma himself took note of the incident and tagged relevant authorities on twitter to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.

On June 1st a shocking video of a mob mercilessly beating a doctor in Assam was shared by a social media user tagging the CM. The CM took note of it and immediately directed the Assam police and special DGP Gyan Pratap Singh to find the culprits. Within 12 hours of the issue coming to light, police arrested 24 people involved in mob violence against Dr.Seuj Kumar Senapati posted in Udali Covid Care Centre, Hojai. The DGP live tweeted the arrest of perpetrators including the woman who can be seen beating the doctor with chappals in the video.

It turned out that they were the relatives of one Mohammad Giasuddin who was treated by the doctor. As per the reports available, the patient, a Covid-19 positive, was admitted on June 1 at 11 AM and died of Covid related complications at 2 PM on the same day. Giasuddin’s relatives Mohammed Kamaruddin, Jainal uddin, Rehanuddin, Saidul Alam, Rahim uddin, Rajul Islam, Tayebur Rahman and Sahil Islam and 16 others assaulted the doctor in rage.

All Assam Contractual Rural Doctors Association (AACRDA’21) tweeted the sequence of the incident. Dr.Seuj, a junior doctor was posted in Kaki PHC in Hojai under National Health Mission only a few weeks ago and was appointed in the Udali Covid Care Centre(CCC) recently. Patient Giasuddin is said to have had severe Covid and was recommended to be shifted to a centre with better facilities. Before he could be shifted, Dr.Seuj who had just come in for his evening shift, went to catheterise the patient. However Giasuddin had already passed away by then. Following this, a huge mob is said to have surrounded the CCC, ransacked the centre and beaten the doctor black and blue.

All of them have been arrested now and the police have assured that they will “submit a strong charge sheet in the shortest possible time and ensure the criminals are brought to justice”. CM Himanta also promised that justice will be served and that he is personally monitoring the investigation.

Many organisations condemned the incident and called for protest. In response to this call, outpatient departments were shut down and doctors protested in solidarity with Dr.Seuj. While it was a Muslim mob that attacked the doctor, another doctor Syed Faizan Ahamd took the opportunity to put the blame on Baba Ramdev. He related the incident to Baba Ramdev’s speech criticising allopathy and accused him of provoking patients forgetting or perhaps hiding the fact that it is Muslims who are against vaccination and spreading all kinds of canards about Covid vaccines.

It is unlikely that either Dr.Syed Faizan Ahmad, or the Indian Medical Association headed by an evangelist, Dr.Johnrose Jayalal, do not know of the incidents where Assadudin Owaisi’s goons beat up doctors in Malegaon, Tablighi Jamaat members spat at doctors in Delhi, beat up doctors in Hyderabad, used obscene language and made vulgar gestures at the nurses in Ghaziabad. It is to erase such incidents from the public memory that they are targeting Baba Ramdev. However Assam CM and police not only arrested the perpetrators quickly but released their names as well for the world to see.
