On Saturday, 29th August, West Bengal police recovered a mutilated dead body from a passengers’ waiting area along the Falakata-Madarihat state highway in West Shalkumar. The woman has been identified as a mentally challenged homeless woman in her mid-20s who was a familiar face among the residents of Falakata town in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district.
The victim’s head was crushed with a heavy rock and she succumbed to the fatal injury. The police have charged and arrested a youth named Ashraful Islam in this case. The ghastly murder of the hapless woman has sent tremors through Falakata town. Locals share that the deceased had no rivalry with anyone and has never been embroiled in any tiffs in the area. Hence, most locals believe that either the woman was sexually assaulted and then murdered or the accused killed her while she tried to resist a possible rape.
District Superintendent of Police, Bholanath Pandey has informed that they could not ascertain immediately if the deceased had been sexually assaulted. The body has been sent to the hospital for an autopsy. The accused has been taken in custody for 5 days and interrogations are going on.
Locals say that the victim was originally a resident of Uttar Pradesh. She would spend her day mostly begging for food and money and would take shelter at the passengers’ waiting area at night. Police are still trying to find more about the identity and background of the victim.
As per reports, there is a wine shop just a stone’s throw away from the waiting area. Residents allege that miscreants and local youth regularly flock to the wine shop after sundown and create a menace. Police suspects involvement of more than one person in this murder and they are still interrogating Islam. The police have further affirmed that there are existing accusations of creating menace in the area against Ashraful Islam.
