“On 26 April 2025, around 150 delivery riders of a large and popular quick commerce firm walked off the job at the Ranipur dark store in Shri Ram Colony, Varanasi.

The riders had eleven demands.

They wanted an end to the mandatory 12 pm to 4 pm shift slot, the hottest four hours of an Indian summer day. They wanted shaded waiting areas with drinking water and fans. They wanted their per-kilometre rate restored from Rs 9 to the Rs 14 it had been before a unilateral cut. And they wanted, in a phrase the company’s labour-organising coordinator did not soften, “cotton uniforms for the summer……”
